A Business Tip From The World’s Fastest Man.

After one incredible performance after another in the Beijing Olympics, Usain Bolt continues to shatter world records (his own)  in the 100 and 200. A recent article in the New York Times about Bolt made an interesting point that is relevant to the advertising world.

“It is not just that Bolt wins; it is how he wins.”

When you see Usain in a race, he’s not racing the men in the lanes on either side of him, he’s clearly racing the clock. That’s a good lesson for marketers. To often companies become so focused on what their competitors are doing, they lose site of their own goals. Next thing you know, your competition starts to nudge you in a different direction, which can derail your brand. Starbucks for example, recently got caught up in price wars with McDonald’s and Dunkin Donuts and for a few months they lost sight of what makes Starbucks tick.

Know your competition. Stay focused on your goals. Win big.
