How Many Emails Equal Too Many? Use Common Sense.

After ordering some flowers from a major florist, they began bombarding me with email. Every day I’d find one in my inbox with some sort of special offer. After two weeks of this, I decided to unsubscribe. The unsubscribe link took me to the page above.

WAIT! Are you leaving because of too many emails?

Are they kidding? The fact that the company had to add this copy to their unsubscribe page is a pretty good indicator that yes, they are sending far too many emails. My guess is that most people are so annoyed with the amount of email they were receiving from this marketer that they simply unsubscribe and ignore the options in the right column.

Here’s the deal. If you’re going to invite people to subscribe to your email alerts, and your company runs a lot of promotions or has a lot to share with customers, give people subscription options. Let them choose what type of offers or news they want to receive rather than trying to force feed them a ton of content they probably don’t want.

The thing to keep in mind is that when people sign up for email, it’s a pretty good sign they like you and want to hear from you. But, they probably don’t want to hear from you every single day of week. Think before you blast and your customers and fans will leave their inbox open for you.
